Maps Tell the Story: Plan for the Future

Purpose:
This contest will provide students with an opportunity to investigate how maps can help plan for the future. The term “plan” can be interpreted broadly to fit your existing curriculum. A few examples are: landscaping a yard, improving a watershed’s health, planning a vacation, protecting eco-systems (environmental planning), planning to help those in need, designing a garden tour of your community, or investigating alternate energy sources.

Entry information:
Create a project that is in accordance with the purpose which aligns to the state curriculum standards. You can enter as individuals, small groups, or as a classroom. Entries will be grouped into the following four Divisions based upon grade level: Elementary School (K-3) & (4-5), Middle School (6-8), and High School (9-12). We have three Categories available for each Division and each will be awarded first, second and third place prizes. The three categories are:
Poster Category: Create a Poster by drawing a map or using transparency overlays to display your topic – No entries larger than 22” x 28”
GIS Electronic Map: Create a map using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software - suggested map size 8.5” x 11”, no entries larger than 11” x 17”
Multi-media: Create either: a video, web page, podcast, or digital slide show - 12 slides maximum, including title and reference for slide presentations; video and podcasts not to exceed 5 minutes.
Judging:
The Delaware GeoEducation Subcommittee will pre-judge all entries based on creativity, research content and best overall portrayal of the information. The top three entries in each Category by Division will be the Finalists and presented at the Delaware GIS 2010 Conference on February 10, 2010 at the Sheraton Conference Center in Dover, Delaware. These Finalists will then be judged by conference attendees for final placement. All winners will be announced at the close of the conference and notified by phone or email.
Awards:
All Finalist entries will be displayed on the Delaware GIS 2010 Conference website (www.degis.org) following the conference. A prize will be awarded to the first place entry from each Category by Division. All Finalists will receive a Certificate of Achievement. The teachers of first place entries will receive a complimentary registration to next year's Delaware GIS Conference.
